Avalanche Rescue: How We Helped the AIARE Team Curb an Onboarding Landslide

An awesome organization with a need for an awesome online education platform

AIARE was founded as a non-profit in 1998 to provide quality avalanche safety training and significantly improve the public’s awareness of winter backcountry skills through a comprehensive education program. With an international presence already established, AIARE
currently works with over 100 course providers and nearly 500 AIARE-trained instructors to
deliver their accredited avalanche awareness curriculum as a required companion to in-person,
seminar-style training sessions.



Initially, the AIARE training course material was hosted on a platform allowing for only basic
functionality and minimal interaction opportunities and one that kept educational experiences
completely separate from the main AIARE platform and interface. The organization wanted to
overhaul their platform, incorporate a dedicated learning management system, and improve
digital delivery methods for their online avalanche training content to further elevate their
educational offerings.

How a content refresh and platform rebuild saved the day

To create the level of functionality and accessibility desired, OTC developed a more streamlined website infrastructure, which included merging the educational AIARE site with their primary informational platform. In order to achieve that goal, OTC rebuilt the existing AIARE site with the software necessary to support a robust online learning environment. This step not only strengthened AIARE’s web presence, it also created the opportunity to remove redundancies that previously existed on the site.

After rebuilding the main site infrastructure, OTC reorganized AIARE’s training curriculum and content into the newly established LMS system. While the appearance of the courses remains similar, the new platform allows for more functionality on the administrative side of the website.  A new easy-to-use system allows for tracking student registrations on a provider basis as well as monitoring student progress through the course material.
